For Garrick, the case had become about one thing – tracking down Corporal Colin Ryman.

Find Ryman; find Molly.

He was operating in the realm of guesswork and hunches, but every instinct told him that this was the correct direction. He also knew that Drury would throw a fit if she knew that his focus was straying, even fractionally, away from Molly Meyers.

Drury had been unusually silent since she’d brought him onto the investigation. He suspected partly because the kidnapper had insisted that he lead it. And keeping a step removed gave her denial space should anything go out of hand, which could easily happen in a kidnapping. Not that he could accuse her of such selfish behaviour. She’d put her neck on the line for him many times, and he didn’t imagine this case would be an exception.

Returning to the station, the only communication he’d received from Drury followed on from the sudden media flurry surrounding the bomb squad incident. So far, the bomb threat had help concealed what was found in the vehicle. Secrecy about the kidnapping was still paramount while the clock was ticking. Drury’s message was succinct:

COMMISSIONER EDWARDS IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE OPTICS.

Rather than demand regular status updates, which would be a waste of time and resources, the simple message suddenly added an inordinate amount of pressure on Garrick. Scott Edwards was Kent Police’s Crime Commissioner, a public figure who Drury answered to. In the past, she’d always dealt with him efficiently, although his last case involving a film production had brought with it some unexpected political pressure courtesy of Edwards and his connections in Whitehall. Garrick was no fool; the Commissioner was undoubtedly putting pressure on his boss.

Chib and Wilkes had stayed at the scene as Zoe’s SOCO arrived and combed through the vehicle and Wendy’s house, just in case the kidnapper had been inside. He already knew far too much about Garrick’s personal life, so much so that he must have been under surveillance – and not just from Military Intelligence.

Fanta was on a call, talking so low that Garrick couldn’t make out what she was saying as he passed. He looked at his phone as a text from Wendy came in.

WITH MY PARENTS XX

That was a relief. Not that he expected anything to happen on the police ride there. He’d also instructed an officer to discretely keep watch on the house. Even Wendy didn’t know somebody would be looking out for her. He typed a curt reply and sent it before it occurred to him to add a few kisses at the end, too. They went separately. Open declarations of affection were foreign territory for Garrick, doubly so when it came to text etiquette. He really needed a crash course from somebody youthful, like Fanta, but the thought of her having such power over him was frightening.

DC Harry Lord returned from the communal kitchen with some fresh brews. Garrick was grateful for the matcha tea as he sank into his chair. The stress was pummelling his shoulder muscles and as Wendy had reminded him, he still looked like hell.
